Friday, October 1 (E10 4B Honors)

Today's Objective: Students will determine author’s purpose by applying reading strategies while we compare, make connections, and draw conclusions.

Today's SAT Word: Subliminal (adj): A hidden meaning - something which exists below the conscious threshold.

Today's Soundtrack: "Back to the Future" (Main Theme) by Alan Silvestri

We have chosen this song today because it helps to the stage for a full day’s instruction about traveling through time and back to the present day. This is precisely what the characters in our story for the day will do during today’s lesson. In addition, it also serves as an example of how we can find subliminal messages in everyday life!

Today's Warm-Up Question: Keep an eye out for SUBLIMINAL messages when we are reading! Subliminal messages are cleverly hidden tricks from the author (like foreshadowing!) that will sneak up on unsuspecting readers to help “give away” the deeper message of the story.Go back into the text that we’ve read so far: do you see any SUBLIMINAL messages? Look for hints or clues along the way! Write what you’ve found!

Tonight's Homework: Dig through magazines, books, CDs, artwork, advertisements, television commercials – YOU NAME IT! We are keeping a close watch for SUBLIMINAL MESSAGES (a.k.a. “hidden meanings”)

For next class, please write a brief paragraph explaining:

1) Where you found the subliminal message
2) What that subliminal message is!
3) Why you think that the author (or artist) chose to include that message in the first place

Friday, October 1 (E10 1B and 3B)

Today's Objective: S.W. determine an author's purpose by applying reading strategies while we compare, make predictions, and draw conclusions.

Today's SAT Word: Contiguous (adj):

Connected in a sequence.

"Stories about time travel often suggest that the history of the world is contiguous -- and each event follows one another in a series, like dominoes."

Today's Soundtrack: "Jurassic Park" (Main Theme) by John Williams

We have chosen this song because it comes from the most famous dinosaur movie of all time. In the movie, characters find a way to replicate dinosaur DNA in order to bring these creatures to life in the modern world. In today' story, "A Sound of Thunder," our main characters take a trip back in time in order to go on a dinosaur hunt.

Today's Warm-Up Question:

Open your textbooks to page 72. On a separate sheet of paper in your notebook, identify FIVE of the following eight “Text Features.” Tell me WHAT that feature is, and WHERE you found it!

1) Title
2) Headings
3) Photographs
4) Captions
5) Footnotes
6) Graphs
7) Maps
8) Font

• Based on what we have read so far, what do you think that Ray Bradbury is trying to say in this story? Defend your opinion -- what makes you say that?

Thursday, September 30, 2010

Thursday, September 30 (E9)

Today's Objective: S.W. study text to determine a proper sequence of events.

Today's SAT Word: Exception (n.):

A case where the normal rules do not apply.

“Students aren’t normally allowed to wear casual clothing to school, but Mr. Thomas granted a one-day exception on school spirit day.”

Today's Soundtrack: Irish Folk Ballads (Instrumental)

We have chosen these songs in order to help give students a broader feel for the culture and "flavor" of the Irish people. By playing folk music, we open our ears to a tradition that is largely born of the poorer class -- the very same class, in fact, from which the author of Angela's Ashes himself emerged.

Today's Warm-Up Question:

Write a paragraph retelling a story of a time when you (or someone you know!) was really, really sick! How did it feel? What did you do? Did you go to the hospital? How long were you sick!?!

Tonight's Homework:

Write a one paragraph (+) reflection on the following in your Reader/Writer Notebook:

What did we learn about our author and these various diseases in today's class? In your own words, please summarize the story and details that we have covered so far.

Wednesday, September 29 (E10 1B and 3B)

Today's Objective: S.W. determine an author's purpose after a close reading of the text.

Today's SAT Word: Intentions (n)
Goals or reasons for doing something.
"Though Jamar had the best of intentions to study for his test when he got home, he ended up falling asleep before he could even open his notebook."

Today's Soundtrack: "Bang Bang" by K'Naan and Adam Levine

We have chosen this song because it tells the story of a male main character who is "shot... down with a loaded shotgun" after speaking his mind and telling a woman how he feels. This is exactly the same ending as we saw when studying Harrison Bergeron in our last class.

Today's Warm-Up Question: Is the world of Harrison Bergeron a BETTER world than our society of today, or is it WORSE? In a complete paragraph, defend your position! Be sure to use as many examples from the text as you can!

Tonight's Homework: Compose a paragraph (+) on TIME TRAVEL!!!

If you could travel to any place in time (past or future), where would you go and why? Tell me all about it!!! What would you do? What would you see? What would you change? Etc., etc., etc.

LET YOUR IMAGINATIONS RUN WILD!!! Remember, five sentences = one paragraph! And this will be collected and GRADED for next class.

Tuesday, September 28, 2010

Tuesday, September 28 (E9)

Today's Objective: Students will demonstrate mastery of all concepts covered so far this year.

Today's SAT Word: Cumulative (adj): Made up of an accumulation of things.

The students didn't have to panic for the cumulative exam, because they had studied all of the material for weeks in class.

Today's Soundtrack: "Eye of the Tiger" by Survivor

We have chosen this song -- made famous by the Rocky movies and games like Rock Band and Guitar Hero -- today because it is a fantastic "pump-up" song and a motivational tool. In addition (and since the song is famous for being associated with an action-filled sports movie), "Eye of the Tiger" is also LOADED with action words (a.k.a. verbs), and it is a perfect track to give an ear to since we are studying all of the many verbs that exist in the English language.

Today's Warm-Up Question: List for me as many verbs as you can possibly think of! Some students were able to reach 100 verbs OR MORE in the 7 minutes we used for our warm-up. Remember, verbs are ACTION WORDS -- things that somebody can DO!!!

Today's Lesson Notes: (none -- see back of the classroom handout folders for a copy of today's exam)

We have chosen NOT to enter class to a song today, as our story discusses the issues of handicaps. For this reason, today's instruction began in silence and in sign language in order to acclimate students with the various everyday challenges that are associated with physical and mental handicaps.
