Wednesday, October 20 (E10)

Today's Objective: Students will continue pre-writing their Q1 final projects, and students will differentiate between sentences and fragments.

Today's SAT Word: Differentiate (v.)

To point out the differences between two (or more) items. To contrast.

"In today's class, we differentiated sentences from fragments."

Today's Video: "This Is Halloween" (From "The Nightmare Before Christmas") by Danny Elfman

We have chosen this video today because it serves as a perfect introductory piece to the world of Halloween Town in "The Nightmare Before Christmas." It starts with a big, wide, shot and zooms through the town in order to introduce each of the supporting characters (briefly) before landing on the main character himself.

Today in class, we will be studying how to compose an introductory paragraph, and our introductory paragraphs should end up looking a lot like the written equivalent of the video we've watched -- moving from WIDE to NARROW in order to give a quick overview of the material we will be covering throughout the rest of our composition.

Today's Warm-Up Question:

Create a chart like the one you see below. Then BRAINSTORM as many themes from each of the stories that we’ve read as you can possibly think of and start filling them in!

Interlopers H. Bergeron Sound of Thunder The Pedestrian Montgomery Boycott

Today's Soundtrack: "Say" by John Mayer

We have chosen this song today because it echoes a repeating chorus that you should "say what you need to say." Since we are studying sentence structure and learning how to write our very own 600-word compositions, this is a great musical reminder of the job we need to do.

Today's Warm-Up Question:

What CHALLENGE do you think you will be writing about for your Q1 Final Project?

Be sure to consider:

1) WHAT the challenge was
2) HOW you responded to the challenge
3) WHAT you learned from the experience

"Montgomery Boycott" by Coretta Scott King (story begins on p. 125)
