Friday, September 3 (E10)

Today's Objective: Students will read and comprehend "The Interlopers."

Today's SAT Word: Interloper (n): An intruder. One who becomes involved in a place or situation where they do not belong.

John Cena was going to win the championship belt, but an interloper distracted him at ringside and cost him the match at the last second.

Today's Soundtrack: "Talkin' to Myself" (Radio Edit) by Eminem (featuring Kobe)

We have chosen this song today because it is a "diss" track, and it addresses the notion of rivalries, beefs, and feuds among members of the recording industry. Today, we will be talking all about rivalries and feuds.

Today's Warm-Up Question: Write about a famous feud or rivalry!

What rivalries or feuds do you know about (in your own life or in the world around you)? Write a paragraph explaining the history of the rivalry. Be sure to include:

Who is feuding with whom?
Why are these two people (or groups) feuding?
What are they fighting for or what are they fighting over?
How long has the rivalry existed?
Is one side “winning”?
Which side do you support? Why?

Thursday, September 2 (E9)

Today's Objective: Students will demonstrate mastery of taxonomy basics.

Today's SAT Word: Articulate (adj.) - Speaking with precision and clarity.

Even though Eminem raps incredibly fast, he is so articulate that you can usually understand every single word he is saying.

Today's Soundtrack: "Talkin' to Myself" (Radio Edit) by Eminem (featuring Kobe)

We have chosen this song today because it demonstrates clarity and articulation. Even though the artist raps quickly, his words are precise and easily understood.

Today's Warm-Up Question: Is it ever right to disobey your parent/guardian? Why or why not?

Tonight's Homework: Never mind what your PARENTS or your FRIENDS have said about you -- what do YOU want to be when you grow up? Write a paragraph detailing your future ambitions. Be sure to include information on just how, exactly, you plan on pursuing this career. Also be sure to think about just WHEN, exactly, you will plan on starting on your path toward this goal.

Wednesday, September 1 (E10)

Today's Objective: Students will demonstrate mastery of taxonomy basics.

Today's SAT Word: Eloquent (adj.) - Speaking in a clear, articulate, and professional manner.

President Obama is such an eloquent public speaker that people flock to their television screens to hear whatever he has to say.

Today's Soundtrack: "Liztomania" by Phoenix

We have chosen this song today because its title, "Liztomania," can also serve as a pun on the phrase "List-o-mania." Mania is a noun meaning "something that people get really excited about," and taxonomies are all about breaking things down into lists.

Today's Warm-Up Question: Write a taxonomy of your own!

In our last class, we discussed four different taxonomies. We separated movies by genre, we divided musicians by band, and we identified the different social circles right here at Crossland. What other subjects can we create a taxonomy for? Pick a topic of your choice and break it down into two or more categories. Then provide at least two examples that might fit into each category you’ve created.

SAMPLE TOPICS MIGHT INCLUDE:
Vacation Destinations
Breakfast Foods
Types of TV Shows
Clothing Brands
Sports
Types of Music
Video Games
After-School Clubs and Groups

Tonight's Homework: There is an old saying that "good fences make good neighbors."

Monday, August 30, 2010

Monday, August 30 (E10)

Today's Objective: Students will demonstrate mastery of Bloom's Taxonomy.

Today's SAT Word: Taxonomy (n) - A system for organizing things into groups.

Today's Soundtrack: "I Gotta' Feelin'" by The Black Eyed Peas

We have chosen this song today because we divided like items into taxonomies, or groups. The Black Eyed Peas is a musical group consisting of four different recording artists -- but they are collectively known as a group (or taxonomy).

Today's Warm-Up Question: What different groups of students exist here at Crossland High School?

Describe the different groups (also known as “cliques” or “social circles”) that exist here at Crossland. Who hangs out together? The athletes? The music students? (etc.)

How do students divide themselves into groups? By grade level? By common interest? By neighborhood? (etc.)

REMEMBER: Mr. Meehan is NEW to Crossland! Please provide PLENTY of detail wherever possible!
