Friday, September 17 (E9)

Today's Objective: Students will use a variety of during-writing strategies to help make a text easier to understand as we generate and develop ideas of our own.

Today's SAT Word: Discordant (adj.): not in harmony.

“At the VMAs, the majority of Taylor Swift’s live performance sounded discordant."

Today's Soundtrack: "The Climb" by Miley Cyrus

We have chosen this song today because today’s story continues our discussion about the challenges of becoming a prodigy, and this song speaks about one prodigy’s efforts in overcoming challenges in her own life.

Today's Warm-Up Question: “What CHALLENGES did you face when working through last night’s homework?”

Write a paragraph explaining any challenges you may have faced while working on last night’s homework. Did it make sense? Did you actually
attempt to do it, or did you have other outside “challenges” that got in the way of completing your assignment? Make sure that your answer
identifies the three following points:

1) What was the challenge?
2) How did you respond?
3) What did you learn from this experience?

Tonight's Homework: Respond to the following WriteAbout question in Reader/Writer Notebook:
• Who has the greater challenge, the mother or daughter? Explain your thinking.
• What is the most important thing to learn about the mother or the daughter from how either responded to her challenge? (Use evidence from the text to support your response.)
