I do not understand but i will give you my best answer.I think the heather birds represents the group that she is trying to join. The old man said that he would hopes to be mythological someday because it does something for ego. Millicent is joining the group because she wants to be apart of the cool kids in school so that is doing something to her ego.

The significance of the heather birds is a metaphor because it would be comparing the traits of the bird with the character and the girls who were trying to get initiated in the group.
ReplyDeleteIn the story of Initiation by Sylvia Plath tells the story of a girl who is trying to fit in by being in exclusive club. She ends up finding out how to be herself and not joining the club. Through Symbolism of the characters the author is showing the readers the importance of being yourself. Heather birds is the symbol in the story. Millicent is the main character, she finds out about these birds on the bus from a guy whom she met while being dared as part of an initiation, the guy on the bus believes in mythlological creatures.

ReplyDeleteinitiation is a story about a girl trying to fit into a group and they make her do things that she most likely wouldnt want to do on a daily basis . the significance of the heather birds metaphor was to make apparent that everything isnt so serious and you just have to enjoy what you ' ve been given .
Initiation is a story about a girl Who wants to fit in with popular group of people at her high school.But the group makes her do things like survey people about what the eat for breakfast and other things just to get her in the group. To me the author is trying to get it through our heads that being your self is the best thing to do even if it means not being popular with aye certain group.
