  1. When Millicent sat down and really thought about the heather birds statement the old man said, she realized that she didn't want to be apart of an exclusive social group. The heather birds represent a group of people. But in that group, there is no discrimination against anyone different. Millicent didn't want to lose her friendship with Tracy. So she decided that the best thing for her to do was go through with the initiation to prove that she had what it takes to become one of the club's members. She still had her friendship with Tracy in the end but also earned her respect from the girls in the club.

  4. Varian McCray I think the significant's of that old man on the bus mentioning something about heather birds was the way that he mentioned it and the fact That Millicent thought about it maybe was a quote that could help her with her situation she was going through

The significance of the heather bird metaphor was that Millicent wanted to be accepted in the soriety at school. In order for her to be in the group she had to do what Bev tells her to do. Millicent had to go through initiation to be accepted. When the man answered her survey question be saying, "Heather birds' eyebrows", she actually thought about what he said. After hearing that she forgot all about the initiations she had to go through. They no longer bothered her.

  9. The significance of the heather birds in the story show that Millicent realizes that its something more important than the initiation to join a group. After talking to the old gnome man she realized that being in a group/crowd was not what she wanted to do. So she made the decision to not join the crowd. I believe she made the right decision. If I was her i would have done the same thing.

The significance of the heather birds metaphor at the conclusion of this story was that Millicent found out she was better then she thought she was . The heather birds metaphor represented not being an individual and in a crowd . Millicent decides not to join the exculsive club but , continues to do the intiation to gain respect . I believe Millent has a good head on her shoulder but , needed some help to find it . By the end of the story Millicent maintains her friendship with Tracy and everyone else .

  11. In Initiation, Millicent wanted to be apart of her school's sorority. To be apart of that sorority she had to do whatever Bev ordered. She also had to give up her individuality. When she came across the man on the bus, she thought about what he said about the heather birds. The whole significance of the heather birds was a metaphor of individuality and being set apart from everyone else.

The significance of the heather bird metaphor was that Millicent was doing all that she can to fit in to the group at school. So she went on an did the initiation proceess she went on the bus to ask the people what they had eaten for breakfast. Everyone gave her a normal answer except the one old gnome man who said ' heather birds eyebrows'.Once the old gnome man said that millicent could not believe it but he was different from the rest she realizied that she could be herself an still fit in. She could also have the friends that she wanted. so thats what she did an she got everything she had hoped for by the end of the story.

  14. the significance of the heather birds metaphor is that millicent was crazy things to fit in a soroity at skool.one day whlie millicent and beverly were on the bus and millicent was forced to a survey and she asked this little man that looked like a gnome.millicent asked the man what he liked to eat for breakfast and the man said heather birds on toast. millicent asked the man what was heather birds and he told her it was a mthyical thing. i think the reason why the man told millicent about the heather birds because i think he knew whatmillicent was going through and at the end of the story she gets the gist of the heather bird metaphor.
